Why is my toilet blocked?
There are several reasons why your toilet might have a blockage and not be flushing completely, fortunately, in most instances, the causes are not serious, and at times these can be rectified simply, saving you time and money. Let's look at possible causes of a blocked toilet and some common issues with toilets.
Continuous running water in the toilet bowl
Clogged toilet - not draining, backing up
Slow-draining toilet - water not completely draining when flushed
Not flushing efficiently - needing to flush the toilet a few times to clear the bowl
Common causes of blocked toilets
Hair
Toilet paper
Food
Cotton balls
Diapers or baby wipes
Toys or other items put in the toilet
Tampons or sanitary napkins
Or more seriously, tree roots in your plumbing system
Below are a few DYI remedies that may be used if you are stuck in a messy situation.
DIY toilet-clearing remedies
Plunger - place over the outlet in your toilet and push down gently to create a seal, then continue to push the plunger up and down for a few minutes, making sure the seal is not broken. After a few minutes pull the plunger up to break the air seal. The water should rush down the drain. Repeat if need be.
Dishwashing liquid and hot water - Put a squirt of dishwashing liquid in the toilet bowl followed by half a bucket of hot water, (not boiling) leave for about 15 mins minutes, then flush.
Wire coat hanger drain snake - unravel the coat hanger until it is straight, and push one end into the toilet to loosen any possible debris until it comes free. This is the home version of a drain auger which can be purchased from most hardware stores. Note - this method is not recommended as coat hanger wire can damage your drain pipe.
Baking soda and vinegar mixture - put 1 cup of baking soda in the toilet bowl followed by 2 cups of vinegar, and leave for about 30 mins, this combination will react to form a fizz, leave for a few minutes, then flush.
If you have tried one of the various home remedies mentioned, but the blockage is just proving to be too stubborn, it's time to contact a blocked drain plumber. The reason might be that the blockage is too far down the pipe or the drain is too solidly blocked for any DYI approach.
